I have a sneaking suspicion...

... that my ISP conducts covert blocking. Some days, when I was downloading my backup of my Atlantis DVD's (yes, that's what I did. Own the lot of them, downloaded them to have a backup. Illegal, yes. Immoral? I don't think so), my Internet connection would suddenly disappear. Period.
Now, mostly, it would become very, very slow when I wanted to use the Internet while downloading, which is something complicated I really couldn't be bothered to look into because mostly I'd download while I was a) reading novel-length fic or b) gaming. But that would all sove itself, when I shut the download down and switched my torrent-client off.
But sometimes... sometimes that wasn't enough. Sometimes (and, yes, sometimes includes times when I downloaded for 8-10 hours straight), that wouldn't help.
I discovered (through trial and error. Mostly error), that I can 'fix' the problem my having my Zonealarm block everything going to and from the Internet. And leave it like that, for a few hours. Sometimes overnight.
Which kinda, sorta leads me to the conclusion that my ISP have a download-limit they just don't tell their customers about! Which... kinda pisses me off, tell you the truth. They could traffic-shape to their hearts' content - but have the balls to tell me about it up front, so I could decide whether to pick you or somebody else. Because, really? Your unlimited download was one of the reasons why I didn't kick up a fuss when you bought out my old ISP.
