For God's sake, people - STOP!

For the last while, I seem to have had bad luck in fic. Either that, or I've just stumbled on stuff that a beta would - hopefully - have caught.
The thing is, that I've seen any number of writers use the phrase: "his very male *somethingorother*."
Guys. Seriously. I've seen the show just like you. I know we're talking about two guys. If it freaks out the guy you're writing about, write about it. The fact that Gibbs is Tony's 'very male boss' and that Tony is Gibbs' 'very male subordinate' (just two of the shining examples I've stumbled on lately - from two different fics, by two different authors no less!) isn't exactly a surprise to me. And I feel pretty confident it isn't a surprise to the person whose POV you're representing, either.
So... for God's sake - STOP if you find yourself writing that.
Oh also, while I'm at it... If you, for some reason ever find yourself writing the words "as you know" - in that order - STOP! Find a way to re-word it. Find a way to hang a light on it. But for crying out loud: if the two people in the story already knows... why the heck is the one telling the other?
